How much money do book editors make on average?
Tuesday, January 27th, 2009Very Funny, Friend asked:
I would like to be a book editor when I graduate from college, but I was wondering how much money do book editors make on average? I’m asking because I want to be able to live pretty comfortably (a nice house/appartment, food, heating, pets, etc) on my own, and I want to know if I would have enough money to do that. Also, should I major in English? I know that sounds like a stupid question, but is it usually required that the person wanting to be a book editor majored in English? Thank you!

Friday, January 23rd, 2009Stop Killing Your Book Dream with Poor Planning
Wednesday, January 21st, 2009Earma Brown asked:
Are you afraid your dream of writing a book will die inside you? May I be honest? It may, if you don’t plan and get it done. With the right planning and knowledge, you can easily write your important message into a book.
Read the tips below and fuel the flame of your book dream again. This time, stretch yourself; dream a bigger dream. Dream after writing your book, you receive continuing income that grows each month.
Dream you become a sought after expert in your field. You gain the added respect of your colleagues and peers because of your book. You receive increased profits leveraged from higher fees charged. Your clients gladly pay them with book author as one of your titles.
Are you ready to revive your dream yet? Here are a few mistakes to correct and make all your book dreams come true:
Mistake 1 Failure to plan at all.
You must realize your book is a product and as a product it has to be marketed. Your plan provides a map for everything you do afterwards. Your book marketing plan is what I describe as your map. It describes your book, what you will do after the book is completed and published. It also describes who you hope to sell your book to as a target audience. In short, you can say your book marketing plan is your roadmap to success and profits.
Mistake 2 Failure to plan how your book will be published.
Whether you choose self-publishing or a traditional publisher, there are pros and cons to either method of publishing your book. If you choose to pursue a traditional publisher for your book, you should know your book proposal is a sales (direct-marketing) document with a sole purpose. It’s single purpose is to convince a publisher that your book will earn a profit, if published.
The proposal should focus on the size and buying power of the targeted market you will attract, the problem your book solves, how your book plans to solve the problem, how different your book is from others already published on the subject and how you plan to promote your book.
Mistake 3 Failure to include the editor’s cut in your plan.
Give yourself a break. You don’t have to write a 350 page book like your colleague to be successful. It doesn’t even have to be 150 pages. Simply write a short book approximately 100 pages long and fill it with your insightful information, your expertise and/or your experiences. You get to shorten your examples and stories. With a short book, you have no pressure to add every piece of information you know about your topic. Instead, if you have too much information divide your material into two books. Your customers will love you for it. They’ll buy both books because they are easy to read and short.
Mistake 4 Failure to add professionalism to your plan.
Plan to make your manuscript and eventually book the best it can be. Invest in what it takes to make it look and read professional. Don’t just get your friends and family to read it for errors; hire an editor. Your editor will not only help you with grammar and spelling but she will help you stay in the same tense. She’ll cut all your passive voice sentences that make your book hard to read.
Mistake 5 Failure to embrace your audience in your plan.
Not everyone will be interested in reading your book. Even so, I’m convinced there’s a community of people in your field waiting for you to solve their problem. What problems does your message solve for them? Develop an audience profile (picture) and keep it in front of you as you write. That way you can visualize a real person to solve problems for.
Additionally, knowing your market before you write will help you write focused, compelling chapters. Writing to a specific person or group of people will keep your readers reading to the end. Write too general and your readers may put your book down and never pick it back up to finish.
Don’t put it off any more. Take your dream off the shelf. If you wait, you can be this time next year without making your dream of writing a successful book come true. You have the plan, the knowledge and the solution. Now write it all down. Your audience is waiting. Plan, correct the mistakes above and write a book that sells well. Make it different. Make it count. Make it yours.

Enjoy a New Way of Reading With Audio Books
Wednesday, January 14th, 2009Jonson William asked:
Reading is a habit that allows the users to gain knowledge in a very proper manner. It is said that every person should devote some time of his day to reading only. As reading helps the person to evolve into a more matured human being. In addition to imparting mental growth, it also helps the person to develop a better understanding of relations and surrounding phenomenon. However but in today’s fast and hectic life schedule, people hardly find time for reading. And today it is a habit that is quickly loosing its existence among the adult and most importantly among young kids, who hardly find time for reading after spending their energy on video games and other activities.
At this point of time audio books can play a very vital role in reviving this trend among the people again. As the name itself suggests, audio books are a completely advanced version of the modern day books. Hence, it is quite ideal for all those people who hardly find time or are lazy enough to read books.
Users of audio books can read or listen to the bestsellers of past and present, depending upon their choice of kinds of books. These books are widely available in all the categories, ranging from romance to spiritual and to many other genres. This version of books is an ideal one for people who are visually challenged. As they cannot afford to read a book, so for them this form of modern day reading fills for the emptiness in their life.
So the parents who don’t have the time to tell tales to their children, they can afford to relax, as they can buy these types of voice books for them. These books which come in the form of CD’s and MP3 can be played and can serve the same purpose for the children. These are even much better for the old age people, whose eye-sights are quite weak and cannot afford to devote much time to reading books. These audio books will just help them to listen, what they actually want to read. For example, both New Testament and Old Testament are available in these forms.
Another best thing about these digital version of books is that users can also rewind and re-listen to the favourite part of the book again and again. What is more interesting about these audio books is that, since these books are in the narrative form therefore the readers get to listen to an account influenced by personal touch, which adds more value to this form of reading book. These books come at quite cheap prices, which is why now more and more people are now preferring these above other mediums of entertainment such as television, radio and other forms.
Audio books have been the result of the incredible growth in technology. Thus, users can play these digital books on their Ipod’s and MP3 player. So while commuting or relaxing, users can just listen to these books and can make the most of their idle or leisure time. Users can even download these audio books on their music players and Ipod’s. Seeing the popularity of these version of books, the publishers are even making efforts to bring the Online version of these books.
Widely recognised authors like John Grisham, Michael Connelly, Michael Marshall, Stephen King are the few authors whose bestsellers can be found easily in the forms of audio books. John Grisham, one of the best writer, when it comes to legal thrillers, is the main centre of attraction in these type of books. So if as a reader, you are looking for some interesting way of enjoying reading, then you can certainly bank upon these audio books.

The World of Books-amazing World of Adventure and Thoughts
Wednesday, January 14th, 2009Raisa Raima asked:
Since the time when man invented pen and paper, he developed the habit of reading books, inscriptions, scriptures, manuscripts etc. Everyone of us knows that books are a man’s best friend. Because books are the only ones which give solace to heart, build confidence and help everyone of us to develop his perspective and conception regarding any kind of matter. Reading of good books is a good habit which provides many benefits. A few years back, people faced different kinds of problems in sending and receiving books, because at that time the readers have to wait for a long period to get the books. Just to avoid this kind of problem, online book stores were introduced in the market to make the task of every one easy to get books on time. An Online books store is a place where every kind of reader can get his required books with total knowledge and can aware himself by this new concept of getting books through online book stores without facing any kind of problems. With the occurrence of technology, now everyone gets information through internet and other resources. Books are classified and categorised into different branches, even they are placed into section-wise manner, for example- medical books and medical journals, educational books and references, story books(factual, incidental, fictional or descriptive) and general journals and periodicals. The new developed technology which we called online book stores have allowed people to start purchasing, selling and making deals through online stores. The online book store is a blessing for them as people can get their favourite and important books according to their choice which can be delivered to their doorsteps if they started purchasing books through the online medium. Here, book sellers can show their creativity and can provide information in an attractive manner so that they can get more and more buyers for their books. In this case, they must provide higher quality books and informative books to give them first-hand knowledge of the book and these are very helpful for the research scholars to get the up-dated information for their respective subjects. Students of schools and college goers can save money by purchasing books through on line which provides discount on each and every book. With the help of various types of websites and URLs, we can get the knowledge of all available and even of the rare books. Children books are always very attractive as these books contain illustrated images in a colourful manner. Reading of books helps children to build their own concept and thinking by reading various kinds of adventurous and good books. It would become a nice past time for them as it can even help children to get rid of habits like playing video games or watching television for long-long hours. All in all, books are the best past time, stress reliever, confidence builder and energy booster for mind and soul. Books never dishearten any one instead they always help a lot to get of all sorts of problems.

What is the best old style film camera to buy?
Tuesday, January 13th, 2009borabora2go asked:
I am looking to take some pictures that look like they are from the late 70s early 80s. I bought some old kodakrome film and now I need a camera. I like the pictures the Leica R3 takes but the Summilux 50 mm lens is too expensive. Are there any other good old film cameras that pictures like the Leica does?

Effective Methods of Book Promotion
Sunday, January 11th, 2009Elodie asked:
Apart from writer’s block, one of the most frustrating things about writing a book can be the trouble that you have to go through to get it noticed. In the fluid modern market, even authors of top selling novels have to do a bit of personal publicity. Considering the vast expanse of available titles, it is imperative to give your book every opportunity to be noticed. Here are a few handy tips on how to promote the sales of your title:
Book signings
The first point to take of when it comes to book signings, is that the purpose of a signing session is not to sell your book – it is to sell yourself! A book signing creates the ideal platform for the promotion of your book as the ‘book store’ environment is crawling with people who love to read i.e. potential customers.
Depending on your target market, book genre and your personal attitude toward the signing – you could expect to make anywhere from 5 to 100 sales per signing. However, as with every idea of product promotion, you will only get out what you put in.
Here are a few quick tips on preparing for a book signing :
Promote yourself to everyone that you know
Make an effort to invite everyone that you know to your signing. Also, feel free to tell your friends and family to invite everyone that they know. Essentially all that you are trying to do is guarantee a good attendance, so make every effort to get the word out about your signing!
Don’t do it on your own
Try to arrange a book signing with other writers. Believe it or not, the book industry is not always about competition. By having a group book signing, you will feel more at ease and have the benefit of learning from more experienced writers i.e. learn the best way to interact with readers, find out how you can prepare yourself personally for the event and maybe even how to professionally handle ‘groupies’.
Dress appropriately
Essentially, you need to look good, while still being comfortable. The best way to go is ‘causal business’ attire.
Smile
Be as friendly as you can possibly be – greet people, wave and most importantly, smile!
Just remember: a book signing gives you the opportunity to have a bit of fun with your readers, so go ahead and enjoy every minute of the lime light.
Public Talks and Interviews
One of the best ways to gain local publicity for your book, is attaining public exposure amongst your potential target market. While it may sound rather ‘old school’, public talks and radio interviews are highly effective vehicles for publicity – radio itself is one of the most widely used media sources in most first and third world countries. If you are working with an agent, you should definitely try to get a word in about either of these mediums.
If you are handling your own publicity, you should make an active effort to hunt down any interview opportunity. Approach websites like Barnes & Noble Explorations, John Scalzi’s By the Way blog, and Suite101.com
This is an example of a good public speaking idea:
If you find that your book targets children, why not go to its source? It has been noted that schools are the best location to do a reading and give a talk. Firstly, you are guaranteed an audience and secondly, children are highly opinionated and that will give you an accurate reflection of your target market’s interpretation of and comments on your book.
When it comes to public talks and readings, your priority should be the location of your target market.
Online Book Promotion
Online promoting is probably the most powerful marketing tool available to you. Any successful book must make use of online media to boost sales. Here are a few tips for effective online book promotion:
Start a blog well before the release of your book and begin consciously trying to write about topics that will hopefully garner you an audience.
Make use of your current social media sites i.e. MySpace and Facebook, and seek friends with interests in the genre of your book.
Create a personalised webpage for your new book – maybe dedicate an entire lens on Squidoo to it and use that page to display your book’s events info, reviews etc.
If taking on the pressure of marketing your book personally, is something you could do without, it may be a good idea for you to make use of an online service. International promotional companies offer various marketing packages. You could pay anywhere between $10 for a mention on a website for one week, to several thousand dollars for a larger scale online promotional package.
The only downside, apart from forking out hefty bundles of cash, is that these promotional packages don’t let you see exactly how your title is doing. One company, RankTracer, allows you to see how your book is faring while simultaneously promoting and marketing it online – giving you the best of both worlds for a mere $2 per month.
If blogging about your book is the type of online promotion that works for you, you may be interested to hear about the embeddable Amazon sales ranks and graphs feature that RankTracer has recently added to its list of services.
It comprises of a unique html code snippet, which is automatically generated for each tracked book or any other product. This snippet will display a specific product’s sales ranks, performance statistics, with a graph included. Another embeddable snippet displays your book’s best sales rank along with an authentication link for verification. This allows you to show your readers exactly how well your book is selling, plus your shout out can be verified at the click of a button.
By way of example, take a look at this link: My Blog. It will help you visualise the displayed version of the code (the graph, stats and subsequent line about the ‘best sales rank’ are produced by Ranktracer for inclusion into your own blog, site and promotional material).
All that’s required for RankTracer subscribers to achieve this, is a snippet copy and paste into any page that allows html. With the creation of such a code, avenues for personalised online book promotion are endless, plus sales ranks are neatly verified by the company. Remember too that the actual snippets provide direct links to the product in question allowing readers to purchase it at a click of a button.
If your book’s online sales could do with a boost or it simply needs tracking, why not visit the RankTracer website and let the leaders in sales tracking technology help you out.

The Power of Book Reviewers in Book Marketing
Friday, January 9th, 2009Ray Subs asked:
Writing, editing, and getting a book published is a lot of hard work, unfortunately it does not guarantee any tangible sales. In fact, most books published each year fail to sell more than a few dozen copies, creating a very competitive and cut throat book marketing industry. There are many ways people will tell you to market a book, however the most effective is usually attributed to book reviews.
Custom book reviews not only provide an author with substantial buzz for a new book, it also lends the book a sense of credibility that would be otherwise void. There are certainly no shortage of great books on the market today, however only a small percentage of them have the necessary book reviews to urge people to take action.
Next time you are on a book merchants website, have a look at a book that has no reader reviews and ask yourself if you buy this book? Chances are you would pass on buying this book in an effort to find a better, more reviewed book that people can give you some information on before buying it. The bottom line is that book reviewers provide a valuable service to book buyers by taking the mystery out of buying a book.
For whatever reason book merchants typically supply a short and concise review of the book by the publisher. This review offers often too little information for a book buyer to take action. It is therefore up to the book reviewers to provide all the needed info that persuades a book buyer to get their wallet out and click the purchase now button.
Book reviewers are unfortunately a rare breed, as the population of the world turns more and more to TV, DVDs, the internet, and other forms of entertainment. This creates a large demand for high quality book reviews, and thus the price is driven up by major publicity firms that offer such services. Thankfully there are several firms that specialize in affordable book review services, allowing authors to reap all the benefits of custom book review without the big price tag.
Affordable book reviewers can be found, and should be sought out for those interested in gaining major publicity without having to get a second mortgage on their home or put the family dog to work delivering newspapers each morning just to pay your PR firm bill. Further the author that utilizes book review services can see an immediate result in their publicity efforts because book reviews can be completed in a minimal amount of time.
There are many reasons why authors choose to get their books reviewed, but most reasons seem to stem back to the fact that book reviews actually work, and thus it is a safe investment for the author to make.
